Forgot the Furnace Filter Again? Let a Bot Track the Size and Date

When did you last change your furnace filter? If nobody knows, a phone reminder won't fix it. Here's what will.

Forgot the Furnace Filter Again? Let a Bot Track the Size and Date

A reminder to change your furnace filter won't help much unless it also knows the size and the last time you changed it.

Here's how it usually goes. The furnace kicks on for the first cold night. You think, when did I last change that filter? Nobody knows. You pull it out to check the size, drive to the store, and stand in the aisle trying to remember if it was 16x25 or 20x25.

Your furnace filter routine

1. Find the filter and write down the size printed on its frame.
2. Check your filter's packaging or your furnace manual for how often to change it.
3. Write down today's date as your last change.
4. Set a reminder that matches that interval, and check it more often when the heat runs a lot.
5. Keep a spare on the shelf, and reorder when you're down to one.

That's it. The hard part isn't the list. It's remembering the size and the date months from now.

A real problem, not a lecture

One Reddit post sums it up in the title: "Forgot to replace HVAC filter for over 2 years.." A reply from someone else: "Put a reminder on your phone to replace it on the first of every month. That's what I do."

A phone reminder is a good start. And if you're like me, you buy your filters in bulk to save. What always catches me is that I'm not in a place to change the filter when the reminder goes off. I see the reminder and plan to do it this afternoon when I'm home. But I forget that afternoon, remember as I'm going to bed, and tell myself I'll do it tomorrow. Then next month, the same thing again. Before you know it, it's been four months since you changed a filter you're supposed to change monthly. A helper bot knows the supplies you need, reminds you to do the task, and follows up until it gets done.

Where Tim comes in

This is the job Tim "the Tool Man" Graylor is built for. Tim is a home handyman Grok Bot. He keeps one record for every appliance and major system in your house, the furnace included.

  • Size on file. Send Tim a clear photo of the furnace label. He reads the brand, model and serial and reads them back to you. The filter size, from the label or the manual, goes in the furnace's record with where it came from.
  • A heads-up when it's due. Tim's weekly check flags filter changes that are coming up, and stays quiet when nothing is due.
  • The swap date. Tell Tim when it's done, and it goes in the service log. No more guessing when.

If you're new to Grok Bot, this is a good first job. Start Tim with one appliance, the furnace. Send the photo, answer a few questions, and let him set up the weekly check. Next month, add the water heater.

What it doesn't do

Tim doesn't fix your furnace, and this isn't a repair guide. If the furnace sounds wrong, smells wrong, or won't heat, call a heating tech. Tim's job is to make sure the filter, the size, and the date never start with a search.

Start tonight

Pull the filter. Snap a photo of the size on the frame and the label on the furnace. That's your first record.

Then let advanced intelligence remember it for you.
